BOOT  HILL  CEMETARY

THE ARTHUR G. DOZIER SCHOOL FOR BOYS

.

.

Described as Hell on Earth in Florida, we first heard about  the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys in Marianna, Florida in fall 2011.  The school is closed, but the Department of Justice released a report confirming years of brutal abuse inside;  something a group called The White House Boys have been claiming for decades.  Now, there's a renewed push to investigate the area.  Anthropologists from the University of South Florida are plotting a patch of land known as a mass grave for boys who didn't survive their time at the school.   A small, non-descript building known as the White House sits on the campus of the Dozier School for Boys.  A few men who were sent there as children fought to have their stories of abuse heard for decades,  attesting to the fact that the beatings were so bad inside the school some didn't make it out alive.

A group of anthropologists are working to map out the school's on-site cemetery, trying to determine just how many graves there are. School records show at least 84 people died there between 1911 and 1974, but there are only 31 known graves.   As of January 28 2014, University of South Florida researchers had found the remains of 55 boys in a graveyard at the former Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys in Marianna.  Previously, official records had indicated that only 31 bodies should have been in the graveyard.  The number is even higher than  USF's  earlier prediction of 49 bodies.  The Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys has been the subject of several investigations amid allegations of child abuse during its 100-year history.  The school was closed in June 2011.

The researchers are now working to identify the bodies found buried on the school's grounds. They also found bones, teeth and several artifacts, including belt buckles, zippers and buttons, during their search.  Part of the analysis process will include writing a summary report for each body, along with all of the information gathered from the bones and dental remains, the artifacts and the context of the burial.  The bone and tooth samples will be sent to the University Of North Texas Health Science Center for DNA testing.

The team is working with various agencies, including the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, to find possible next of kin so they can collect DNA samples for comparison purposes.  So far they said 11 families of former Dozier students have been located. Researchers hope to find 42 more families.  They have published a list of those families; Researchers said they will continue to search for additional unmarked graves on the school grounds.

We are remembering the young African-American Children ranging from age five (5) through Sixteen (16), who were abused, eventually murdered, and then dumped in un-marked and un-named graves in this Cemetary without embalming, caskets or anything.  More names will be added here,  as they are produced by the Department of Justice.  May the souls of these young African-American Kings  rest  forever in our hearts, minds and in peace.
